A serious theater director has the task of re-mounting the most famous work of her former mentor, the opera Salome. Some disturbing memories from her past will allow her repressed trauma to color the present.. This is the second time Amanda Seyfried starred in a film directed by Atom Egoyan after Chloe (2009). Mentioned in Amanda the Jedi Show: I ALMOST Left | The Best and Worst of TIFF 2023 (2023). There is a haunting and haunting Hawthorne story in which a father, a prominent avant-garde physician, is fiercely protective of his daughter. As a child, he gradually introduces her to a deadly poisonous plant. By the time she matures, anyone who gets too close to her will suffer and die. The poison of the plant was infused into her life blood. The woman is beautiful, but terrible. "Don’t you love it," asks "that no one can knock you down?" Her answer cuts to the bone. "Father, I would rather love someone."Jeanine is a theater director who, like the woman in the story of Hawthorne, is trying to free herself from the shadow of heartless people. Suffering abuse from her father, mentor, husband, and now arrogant actor, – abuse they call "love" – Jeanine tries to heal them and overcome them without losing what is essential and good about herself. She struggles to free herself from the traps that have been set for her. Find something different."Remove one meaning and another will intensify."I love Egoyan films for their depth, surprising twists and explorations of intriguing themes (passion, misjudgment, abuse, trying to find a way forward after wrongs are done, love , perspectives different from mine and more). Following a woman who has lost her way after being abused, Seven Veils continues in typical egoic vein. It is located in the Canadian Opera Company building a few blocks away from where I saw the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Although Egoyan spent too much time in the theater for my taste, I understand why this was done. Egoyan directed the opera troupe’s actual production of Salome and shaped much of it into Seven Veils. Even some of the actors in the actual opera are also in the film. Jeanine was expertly brought to life by Amanda Seyfried. Off topic – why did Seyfried have surgery? Not that she looks bad now, but she looks much better in Egoyan’s previous film, Chloe. (long sigh) As I think about Seven Veils, I like it better. Overcoming the trauma of abuse is a fascinating topic. Someone who said they loved me hurt me a lot. Sometimes it’s hard to see that I’m worthy of love. I see mine in Jeanine’s battles.
